Thierno Barry 'doesn't understand' Everton teammate as four-word lesson learnt
Thierno Barry is still settling in to life on Merseyside 15 months after signing for Everton.
The 23-year-old striker is already a well-travelled player despite his relatively short career so far.
Starting life in his native France with Sochaux, summer 2022 saw him move to Belgium as he signed for SK Beveren.
He would only spend 12 months there before moving to Basel, but again, he'd only last one year with the Swiss giants.
Barry then spent the 2024-25 season in Spain with Villarreal, but like clockwork, left after 12 months to sign for Everton.
With all this travelling, he's sure to have picked up different languages and dialect, but perhaps none will prove trickier to learn than Scouse.
Which Everton star does Thierno Barry need things repeating for?
For any player, having a strong communication line with your teammates on the pitch is vital.
Barry certainly seems to have that with the vast majority of his Everton comrades given his six goals in eight appearances this season.
However, there is one player in this Toffees team who the striker has confessed he's still having a tough time understanding.
Speaking via BBC Match of the Day on X, Barry has picked out Harrison Armstrong as the teammate he's struggling with accent-wise.
"Sometimes it's hard to understand (Scouse accent)," Barry confessed.
"I don't know, sometimes when like Harrison Armstrong talks to me, I need to say to him maybe to repeat like three times because I didn't understand."
Armstrong has one assist for Everton this season, and interestingly enough, it was for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall against Crystal Palace, not Barry.
But what one Scouse phrase has Barry seemingly mastered during his time on Merseyside so far?
Barry knows the only Scouse phrase he'll ever really need
Whilst normal for Merseysiders, one can only imagine how hard the Scouse accent must be to grasp for a player joining from the continent.
Despite being with Everton for well over a year now, Barry isn't quite talking like a local just yet.
"I think now I'm better with the Scouse accent," Barry continued.
He was then asked if he can speak any Scouse slang, to which Barry replied: "How are you, lad? Just that. Just that."
In fairness to the striker, that's perhaps the most important phrase for him to have learnt, with this being the typical conversation-starter on the streets of Merseyside.
Everton fans won't care too much that he's not quite grasped the local lingo, so long as he keeps firing in the goals for David Moyes that's all that matters.
He'll look to make it three goals in as many games when Everton take on Chelsea this Saturday lunchtime.
