Why Alistair Johnston looks tailor-made for David Moyes' Everton after Celtic win

Alistair Johnston to Everton speculation continues to rumble on.

The right-back position is perhaps the most anticipated transfer of this window for Blues' supporters.

The problem has been continously growing over the last few years and it seems Celtic's Johnston is identified as the solution.

Johnston wants to join Everton, which is a signifcant obstacle to be removed in the Toffees' transfer pursuit.

However, Celtic will not budge easy on the Canadian with him still a key player for the Glasgow side.

And that was very much clear after he was selected to start in their Scottish Premiership opener.

How did Alistair Johnston perform for Celtic?

There would have been plenty of eyes on Johnston on Monday (3 August) particularly from those at Hill Dickinson hoping there was no injury.

Luckily, the 27-year-old got through the game unscathed, completing the full 90 minutes against Dundee.

Celtic managed to win 1-0, and while Johnston is known for his attacking qualities, this time it was his defensive side that stood out.

He made 10 defensive contributions against Dundee, which included a 100 per cent success rate in his two attempted tackles as per Sofascore.

Then, he completed two interceptions and made six clearances.

In his individual battles he was also strong, winning five out of six duels at Celtic Park.

Overall, it was a performance that would have further incensed Everton to continue with their push for the right-back's signature.

Especially seeing as David Moyes has enjoyed using a more defensive-minded right-back over the last season.

And Johnston has shown he can play that role, as well as be a threat going forward if needed, two sides of his game that make him a perfect signing for the Scotsman.

What is the latest on Johnston to Everton?

At present, there is still a lot to get over the line before any move for Johnston is announced.

Everton have significant work to do to sign Johnston with it perhaps still being quite a way away.

The Toffees are hoping a move worth around £12million plus add-ons will be enough to finally solve their right-back issue, although Celtic are looking for more.

Certainly after last night's performance, Martin O'Neill will feel vindicated if the Glasgow side up their asking price for Johnston, who has continued to look like the missing piece for Moyes' puzzle.
