Why Kevin Thelwell is to thank as Everton quietly build up transfer kitty

Kevin Thelwell may have left Everton over a year ago, but he could help land the club millions of pounds for years to come.

The Englishman stepped down as Everton director of football when his contract expired at the end of the 2024-24 season.

Thelwell swiftly took over as sporting director at Rangers, where he lasted less than six months before being sacked last November.

He has since taken up a position with the English Football Asssociation.

Plenty of water has passed under the bridge since Thelwell left, and he cannot be knocked for his savviness on Merseyside.

Rangers have already benefited this summer from one of the decisions he made, while an even bigger reward could yet arrive.

The sell-on fees Everton have and still could profit from

Negotiating sell-on fees in deals is imperative for any agreements these days.

That was the case when Anthony Gordon joined Barcelona for £69million earlier this window.

Everton are reported to have had a 15 per cent sell-on clause from any profit made, so that is a nice return of just over £3.5m.

That is hardly a massive amount in the current market, but it is £3.5m Everton were not expecting to land that can go towards another signing.

Lewis Dobbin recently swapped Aston Villa for Southampton for £10m, but there was no profit made by the Villans and therefore no bonus fee for Everton.

Rangers could very much make a profit on Youssef Chermiti, however, should he depart this summer as has been reported.

He cost the Gers £8m upfront, plus £2m in add-ons, but would leave for a fair amount more than that if he is sold.

How much would Everton land from Youssef Chermiti sale at Rangers?

Goodison News reported earlier this year how Rangers rejected a £13m bid from Fenerbahce for Chermiti.

An offer north of that will therefore be needed if he is to depart Glasgow this summer, you would imagine.

How much Everton rake in would then depend on how big the sell-on clause is.

At £13m, Rangers would be making a £5m profit, so that would be £1m for Everton if the clause is 20 per cent.

Every little counts, as they say, and it shows why Thelwell was so smart to include such clauses.
