Report: Everton open talks for Galtier, would have to pay £4m for his services
Everton have reportedly opened talks with the agent of Ligue 1-winning manager Christophe Galtier as the club are looking to sign a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti.
The Italian manager jumped ship to make a return to Real Madrid, leaving Everton in a lurch. After having been linked with a number of managers in the last week, Galtier seems like one they’re seriously looking to pursue.
The Times’ Duncan Castle said on The Transfer Window podcast that Everton have already opened talks with Galtier’s agent to discuss the possibility of him taking over the helm at Goodison Park.
He said, “The guidance I have is that Everton have made contact with Galtier’s agent. They want a ready-made and experienced manager who could fit straight into their camp and not make too many radical changes.”
Signing Galtier won’t be as straightforward as other managers as technically he’s still on contract at Lille, despite having made his intentions of leaving clear in the past.
At the time he was in advanced negotiations with OGC Nice, and it seemed like Lille were happy to comply with his wishes, but they’re now looking to be compensated for the one year that Galtier has left on his contract.
According to French media outlet 20 Minutes, Everton would have to cough up a fee little over £4 million if they are to appoint him as manager.
Rafa’s the man?
Despite £4 million being slightly lesser than what was earlier reported, it is a fee at the end of the day and we’re not sure whether the club will be willing to pay that kind of compensation for a manager.
While Galtier may be a good manager and have a proven track record in France, his lack of Premier League experience may be a major determining factor in Everton’s final decision of hiring a new manager.
Late on Wednesday evening, news broke that the club were now pursuing former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez. [The Telegraph]
Much like Ancelotti, he’s previously managed a Premier League club and big clubs in the continent, and comes with the expertise of handling huge egos in dressing rooms.
He’s also won silverware in his managerial career – so he ticks that box as well for the club.
It will be interesting to see where this one goes, but we believe Galtier’s compensation fee may prevent him from joining Everton.
