BBC journalist: Farhad Moshiri likes Rafael Benitez, Everton fans should consider him
Guillem Balague has claimed that Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is a fan of Rafael Benitez as the search for Carlo Ancelotti’s successor continues.
Ancelotti resigned as Everton manager on June 1 in order to re-sign for Real Madrid, and the Blues have been on the lookout for his replacement ever since.
One of the most shocking names to emerge as a contender was ex-Liverpool boss Benitez, with The Athletic reporting the Spaniard was on the shortlist that was drawn up following Ancelotti’s exit.
There have been conflicting reports since, including from Sky Sports’ Vinny O’Connor, who said that a move for Benitez was “highly unlikely”.
However, writing on his personal Twitter profile, BBC journalist Balague has shed light on Moshiri’s stance towards Benitez, while urging Blues fans to consider him as a viable option.
He wrote: “He [Benitez] knows the city better than most managers, such an important asset. Why not him? I have heard Farhad Moshiri likes him.”
A move for Benitez might not go down well with many Blues supporters who can’t forgive him for his past, but could Moshiri override their emotions and bring him to Goodison Park?
If he does, it would suggest that he firmly believes he is the right manager to bring success back to the Blues.
It would represent one of the riskiest options available to him – if Benitez were to get the job and start poorly, the pressure would be severely cranked up, to the point where his position could become untenable and Moshiri has to take drastic action early on.
But if Benitez was to come in and be an instant success, one can imagine that those dissenting voices would start to dissipate.
Of course, Balague only claimed that Moshiri ‘likes’ Benitez, but the fact that those sorts of discussions and feelings are being brought to light could suggest that he is a more than serious candidate for the Everton job.
In other Everton news, this Africa-born manager is now the overwhelming favourite for the job at Goodison.
