Alan Myers hears Everton interest in Salomon Rondon
Everton have shown an interest in signing ex-Newcastle and West Brom striker Salomon Rondon this summer, according to Alan Myers.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night, the Sky Sports journalist reported that he “heard there was interest” in 31-year-old Rondon but admitted there was “nothing from anyone who’d know”.
Rondon currently plays for Dalian Professional in the Chinese Super League but has not featured for them since a short-term loan spell at CSKA Moscow ended in May.
It seems that Myers isn’t too sure there’s much in the supposed interest in Rondon.
It’s an easy link to make as well. Rafa Benitez has already shown he wants to sign players he’s previously worked with by bringing Andros Townsend to the club.
Rondon shone in the Premier League when he played for Benitez at Newcastle, scoring 12 goals and supplying seven assists in 33 appearances across all competitions during a loan spell at St James’ Park in 2018/19.
It would be fair to say that the Venezuela international peaked under Benitez but that was a few years ago and he’s since been playing in China.
Last term, he did quite well at CSKA Moscow as he scored four times in 10 Russian Premier League appearances.
But do we really need to sign a striker who’ll turn 32-years-old in September?
That isn’t the direction Everton want to be heading in. We need younger players than Rondon and players who haven’t taken the decision to play in China just after hitting their peak in the Premier League.
In other Everton news, an overseas medical is underway ahead of yet another major signing at Goodison.
