Paul Merson predicts scoreline in Everton clash v Burnley

Paul Merson sees Everton and Burnley sharing the spoils on Monday night despite the Toffees’ good start to the season.

In his view, the Merseyside outfit tend to struggle playing in front of their home fans, and would be in for a tough ride should the Clarets open the scoring.

He believes Burnley were unlucky against Leeds prior to the international break and sees them coming up with something against Everton this time around.

In his Sportskeeda column, he predicted a 1-1 and wrote, “Everton were really good against Brighton & Hove Albion, but they do tend to struggle at home. If Burnley get ahead in this game, Everton will be under pressure and might get a bit of stick from their fans.

“They have quality in their ranks, but they’ll face a challenge this week. I thought Burnley were bang unlucky against Leeds – they were the better team on the day.

“This is going to be a tough game, and it may very well end in a draw.”

Need the three points

Everton have started the season strongly and these are the kinds of games they must be winning if they are to finish in the top eight.

After spending close to nothing in the summer, Rafa Benitez has already got this side punching above its weight, but tougher challenges lie ahead.

He’s shown that he can stand up to the supporters and prove them wrong, given some scintillating attacking displays in the past few weeks.

Even against Leeds United, the Toffees were extremely unlucky to share the spoils, and will be fancying their chances against Burnley this weekend.

Demarai Gray has started this season well and all eyes will certainly be on him in the coming few weeks.

Ben Godfrey is also eligible to start and it remains to be seen if Benitez hands him his first start of the season on Monday night.
