Jamie Carragher discusses Everton pursuit of Burnley winger Dwight McNeil

Jamie Carragher suggests Everton will still be interested in signing Burnley winger Dwight McNeil after a reported unsuccessful pursuit in the summer.

Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves wrote via his personal Twitter profile in July that McNeil, 21, was a Rafa Benitez target alongside Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray, both of whom joined the Blues.

However, McNeil could not be prised from the Clarets and he ended up starting against Everton at Goodison Park on Monday night as the home side won 3-1.

Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football [13/09/21] before the game, Carragher referenced Everton’s approach to sign the England Under-21 international.

“McNeil is a player I think Everton are really interested in,” Carragher said.

“I think they enquired about him in the summer, and he’s the guy who got a wonder goal at this stadium last season. I think he’s a really big part of what Burnley do, he adds that creativity at times.

“He’s a really quality player.

“There’s no doubt there may be suitors who think they can take him away from Burnley unfortunately for them, and I think Everton are one of them.”

Gary Neville called McNeil “unbelievable” later in the programme.

Everton only spent £1.7million in transfer fees during the summer, all on Gray.

Townsend, Asmir Begovic, Andy Lonergan and Salomon Rondon all arrived on free transfers with Everton severely hampered by FFP restrictions.

They managed to offload Moise Kean on a two-year loan but another big-money player, James Rodriguez, ended up staying on Merseyside and looks likely to see out the final 10 months of his Blues contract.

Failure to get rid of Rodriguez, among others, likely put paid to their hopes of signing McNeil or Luis Diaz from Porto.

Their late pursuit of the latter is something that may affect their interest in McNeil, however.

Would the club launch big-money moves for both?

With Townsend and Gray in such fine form at the moment, the need for explosive wingers has lessened, for now at least.

In other Everton news, the Blues have signed this attacker after a seven-figure deal was agreed.
