Rafa Benitez must bench Ben Godfrey for Salomon Rondon v Aston Villa
Everton versus Aston Villa may be the perfect game for Rafa Benitez to unleash new signing Salomon Rondon.
The Spaniard handed Ben Godfrey his first start of the season against Burnley, in a move that saw him play a back three.
It did not seem to be the best of choices as once he removed him for Andre Gomes and reverted to a back four, the Toffees looked more in control of proceedings and ended up winning the game.
While that’s not entirely on Godfrey, a 3-4-3 system doesn’t suit the team like a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2, which has been Benitez’s go to formation, does.
Despite all the plaudits Godfrey has received in the past, with Sky Sports’ Ben Grounds labelling him “brilliant”, he will have to make way as Benitez is unlikely to drop Michael Keane right after he scored a goal in the previous game.
Rondon, who joined for free in the summer, will be ideal to throw in and could partner Richarlison up front.
On numerous occasions against Burnley, the Brazilian cut an isolated figure, and having someone to play in front of and alongside him will help him a great deal.
The 83-cap Venezuelan, who has been called “priceless” by his former teammate Matt Richie on talkSPORT [18/03/19, 12:20 pm], would be ideal to throw in against Villa’s centre-back pairing of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa or Axel Tuanzebe.
He has the build to deal with their physicality and could form a good understanding with Richarlison.
Rondon arrived for a certain purpose on Merseyside and it’s about time he starts delivering.
