Darren Bent: Ramsdale better than Pickford at club level
Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale is better than Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at the club level, claims Darren Bent.
The Toffees stopper has been the number one for England in recent years, but Ramsdale’s performances at Arsenal have made many question whether or not he should replace Pickford ahead of the World Cup next year.
Bent also discussed this on talkSPORT and claimed that while Ramsdale, who joined Arsenal this summer for £24million (The Athletic), is better at club level, Pickford’s a different beast for the Three Lions.
He said on talkSPORT (26/10/21 at 9:40 am), “I think he can challenge. He has been brilliant since he has gone to Arsenal. He is exactly what Arsenal needed. A leader and a real character on the pitch.
“But one thing Jordan Pickford has in his favour is that Gareth Southgate trusts him. One thing Pickford also has on his side is the distribution – Pickford’s feet are incredible.
“But, in terms of playing club football, Aaron Ramsdale has been better than him.”
Makes valid points
Few would’ve thought that Ramsdale would hit the ground running at Arsenal and replace Bernd Leno as first choice.
Many questioned their intentions when they shelled out that kind of money for another keeper when there were so many deficiencies in the squad.
However, in hindsight, it’s proven to be a masterstroke and he does stake a very good claim for being England’s first choice.
Bent is right when he says that Pickford’s not been that good at club level, because as a matter of fact, Everton fans themselves, tend to get frustrated by his performances at times.
Surprisingly, under Southgate, Pickford seems to be an improved and close to world class goalkeeper.
At Euro 2020, he was arguably the best goalkeeper and had the penalty shootout gone the other way, he would’ve won the award for it as well.
That said, we don’t see Southgate dropping Pickford for Ramsdale for the World Cup at least, but he could after that.
