Leon Osman slams Everton for lack of set-piece prowess

Leon Osman has torn into the Everton players for being all over the place in their shocking 5-2 defeat against Watford last Saturday.

The former Toffees midfielder has urged Rafa Benitez to ensure that the team are more compact as they were torn to shreds by an energetic Claudio Ranieri side.

He claims that set pieces are the side’s “Achilles heel” and something that they must look to kick out sooner rather than later.

Speaking on the Premier League Analytics Show on Tuesday, Osman said, “Their problems started with the Achilles heel – the inability to defend a corner.

“There was so much panic and it was so un-Rafa like. He’s got to change things quickly and ensure that they’re more robust without the ball and the players need to step up too because some of them have been all over the place for a while.”

Need an improvement soon

The inability to defend corners has been a problem for Everton long before Benitez walked through the door at Goodison Park.

It appears to be systemic and there are a few players in the side guilty of having lapses in concentration which messes up with the entire defensive system during set pieces.

Not like the squad does not have tall players who are good in the air, but they need to be in the right place at the right time, which has not happened regularly.

That might be easier said than done, but things need changing and it needs to happen quickly.

Clubs in the Premier League are smart enough to capitalise on these lapses and can make Benitez and his side pay for it time and again.

Hopefully, the Spaniard spends the next few days with his staff focusing on how to make things better at corners and free kicks.
