Everton midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin tipped to make Championship loan move
Everton midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin could make a January loan switch to the Championship, according to The Mirror.
The Ivorian has made just six appearances for the Toffees since his £25m move for Mainz in August 2019, largely due to injury struggles.
However, he has been fit for the majority of this season and still only been picked twice by Rafa Benitez.
Gbamin made his first league start for over two years against Wolves at the start of this month but was substituted at halftime.
The Mirror suggest that “a half-season loan in the Championship may do him the world of wonders” with the view of getting game time under his belt to help him break into the Everton side.
Out of favour
Gbamin does not appear to have much of a future at Goodison Park, at least in the short-term. A January exit, whether on loan or permanently to the Championship or elsewhere, could help.
The 25-year-old currently has the best chance he has had to get opportunities, with Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andre Gomes and Tom Davies all out injured.
However, for whatever reason Benitez is not trusting him and even picked 18-year-old Tyler Onyango as a substitute in the closing minutes against Manchester City last weekend instead of Gbamin.
The possibility of going to the Championship rests on how eager the midfielder is to get game time and impress.
Gbamin has played top flight football for the last five years so may not be too keen to drop down a level, especially as he will recognise he was bought for £25m as an exciting prospect two years ago.
However, if he is willing to slog it out in the second tier, there may be a way back for him on Merseyside when he returns.
In other Everton news, an exit could be on the cards for one Toffees star.
