Rafa Benitez: Cenk Tosun or Salomon Rondon will start upfront for Everton

Everton manager Rafa Benitez has shed light on who will start up front in Sunday’s Premier League game against Brentford.

The Toffees travel to West London without the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while Richarlison is suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season against Manchester City.

It leaves Benitez short of options in attack, with no other centre forward having scored for Everton this season.

Asked about his selection in his pre-match press conference, the Spaniard said: “At the moment we have two experienced players, [Cenk] Tosun and [Salomon] Rondon available, and a young player [Ellis Simms] that was injured and is coming back.

“Normally for these kind of games, it is for people with experience so they have more chances the two senior players ahead of the young player.”

Surprise inclusion?

The expectation was that Salomon Rondon would start on Sunday, so it is interesting to see Benitez mention Cenk Tosun’s name too.

The Turkish international has not featured for Everton since January and has been absent for most of this season due to a knee injury. He has returned in recent weeks and been named on the bench in the last three matches.

Benitez said after the defeat to Manchester City that he was “quite confident” that Rondon would do well in a starting role, but perhaps he is having second thoughts over a player who has failed to find the net in eight appearances since signing in the summer.

The Colombian is of course still in the frame to feature, but maybe his starting spot is not as assured as believed.

Alternatively, Benitez may be tempted to start Rondon and Tosun together upfront, something he did with Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison earlier this season.

There is plenty of fan clamour over Ellis Simms, but it seems that the Toffees boss wants to ease the 20-year-old into first team action rather than throwing him straight in.

In other Everton news, one out of favour Toffee is being tipped for a January loan exit.
