Demarai Gray addresses Rafa Benitez future after Everton defeat v Liverpool
Demarai Gray says Everton players must take accountability after the Toffees lost the Merseyside derby on Wednesday.
Everton suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against Liverpool in the Premier League clash at Goodison Park.
The Toffees have now failed to win in their last eight games in the league, and Rafa Benitez is under a lot of pressure.
When Gray was asked to comment on the ongoing speculation on Benitez’s position as manager, he said, as quoted by Liverpool Echo: “That’s how it is in football. It always goes to the manager.
“As players, we have to take accountability. We’re the ones on the pitch and we have to do better. We’re a good squad, you can see how we started the season. We’ve had a few injuries, but we can’t use that as an excuse.”
What next for Benitez?
Benitez was not a popular appointment at Everton, and some fans feel he should be sacked immediately.
While fans can understand that the Toffees have missed some key players in recent months, Benitez still should have done better with the available recourses he has got.
The Spaniard is a good manager but will he be given time to turn it around?
Gray has been brilliant this season for the club. The summer signing has made a big impact but overall the squad lacks quality and depth.
Everton fans can see that the players are trying hard and they are giving everything on the pitch. But it’s not working.
That’s partly because Everton have signed mediocre players on high transfers and have struggled to ship them out. The likes of Cenk Tosun and Alex Iwobi are prime examples.
The results need to improve in the coming games, but it’s hard to see from where the next win will come.
