Jim White slams Everton fans for Rafa Benitez banner after 1-1 Chelsea draw

Jim White has taken aim at the Everton supporters who unfurled an anti-Rafa Benitez banner in the away end at Chelsea last night (16 December).

Everton claimed a point at Stamford Bridge on Thursday as Jarrad Branthwaite equalised in the 74th minute to cancel out a Mason Mount strike four minutes earlier.

Reflecting on Friday morning (17 December), White told talkSPORT that Everton fans had “made a mess” of the situation.

He saidL “I must admit when you see a banner at the beginning, ‘Benitez get out of our club’, some of the Everton fans, I must admit that’s when I think ‘nah, you’ve made a mess of that’.

“Because after the 90 minutes, how are those banner unfurlers feeling? Because these kids went out and grafted, not just for the team but Benitez.”

It was painstakingly obvious that the fanbase, or a section of supporters, would turn against Benitez once results took a downturn.

There was uproar when he was appointed as Everton manager during the summer but the noise started to die down after a sterling start to the season saw them go unbeaten in their first five games.

However, amid a spate of injuries to crucial players, their results have dropped off a cliff, and it’s now just one win in their last 11 games.

There are fans, though, who recognise the tough situation Benitez has walked into, only able to spend £1.7million during the summer transfer window and having to cope with numerous absences.

January will be the crucial month for the Spaniard – if he is given funds to strengthen, he has to get it right.

Otherwise, it will be more than a section of supporters calling for his head.
