Nedum Onuoha thinks Everton players are ‘scared’ of making mistakes

Everton players are ‘scared’ of making mistakes and that is affecting their decisions in the relegation battle, Nedum Onuoha told BBC Match of the Day 2.

The Toffees fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium to remain three points ahead of the chasing pack in the bottom three, but face a very tough run of fixtures.

Former Man City defender Onuoha feels that the players are ‘scared’ and after seeing a stat that Everton have made the most mistakes leading to a goal in the league this season, he admitted it’s ‘horrible’ to see as a player.

“Yeah it certainly is and before you know it you’ll start playing the game in a different manner, because you’re so scared of making mistakes,” he said.

“When you see those sort of stats, that’s a horrible position to be in and Alex [Iwobi] will feel that himself.”

“Lets be clear, Burnley are behind them. So for as bad as Everton have been doing, Burnley have been considerably worse than them this season. So it’s a high pressure game, but there was something in the performance today to give them some sort of hope.”

‘Considerably worse’

People seem to be writing Everton off because of their results right now and essentially accepting that they’ll be relegated, but they’re forgetting about the other teams.

Currently Frank Lampard’s side have more points than all of Burnley, Watford and Norwich despite having played less and that does provide them with a slight cushion.

They’ll travel to Turf Moor on Wednesday night in a game that if they’re able to win will see them move six points clear with two games in hand, and that could be enough at this late stage.

The players need to find a way to shake the fear and play their natural game, because the squad is far better than their current league position suggests.

There is plenty of time and scenarios that will see Everton survive, they just need to show confidence and a true representation of themselves to do so.
