Sky Sports journalist: Everton fans very happy with Idrissa Gueye signing as Fabrizio Romano drops update

Everton fans will be thrilled if Idrissa Gueye completes a return to Goodison Park from Paris Saint-Germain, according to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that PSG want to get rid of Gueye, 32, before the end of the week, adding on Tuesday (2 August) that the Senegal midfielder is due to jet into Merseyside for a medical after agreeing terms with the Blues.

Bridge believes Gueye is a good addition to Frank Lampard’s squad but warns Everton that they’re nowhere near done in the transfer market.

“I think it’s a solid signing,” Bridge said live on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk show on Wednesday (3 August), as shown on Sky Sports Premier League’s official Twitter account.

“It plugs a hole in what Everton need. He’s a number six, which is what they need.

“He’s kind of replacing himself, really, because they never actually fully replaced him. I don’t look at Allan as a six, he’s more of an eight.

“Everton fans will be very, very happy with this.

“But look, it’s clear that they need a lot more.

“It’s a decent start and it’ll be good news for Frank Lampard if this does get done.”

All but done

Everton should have Gueye signed up very soon.

Sky Sports’ Alan Myers has even suggested that the midfielder could be in Lampard’s starting line-up when the Premier League season kicks off with a clash against Chelsea this weekend at Goodison.

We doubt that’ll be the case as it’s Thursday morning now and only one full day for Gueye to get prepared for the showdown with Lampard’s former club.

Will he be a good signing for Everton?

He should be better than what we have in some regards but we’re not overly excited by his arrival.

Gueye will turn 33 next month and we doubt he’ll be the same player he was when he left Goodison for PSG a couple of years ago.

He’s also been embroiled in controversy in France for failing to play for PSG when they wore rainbow-coloured numbers on their shirt in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

Do we want a player like that in our squad?

If Gueye hadn’t already played for Everton, there’s be a lot more disdain towards this deal.
