Gary Lineker left fuming after footage emerges from Everton v Manchester United Premier League clash
Gary Lineker believes that Marcus Rashford’s goal for Manchester United against Everton was wrongly called off on Sunday night.
United beat the Toffees 2-1 at Goodison Park in the Premier League but there was controversy surrounding whether or not they should’ve scored a third.
Rashford found himself clean through on goal but after James Tarkowski’s tackle, the ball ricocheted off his hand to ensure that he could slot the ball into an open net after a lucky rebound off Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Lineker took to Twitter to write, “Rashford goal ruled out by VAR for a completely inadvertent handball. Silly, silly law.”
Clear as day
As the footage above clearly shows that it touched his hand, the VAR decided to chalk off the goal as it benefited the attacking player unfairly.
We understand Lineker’s qualms as he was a striker and this is clearly an unintentional use of the hand to find the back of the net.
However, these are the rules laid out and the referees are just following the guidance they’ve been given which is unfortunate and will benefit every team at some stage of the season.
The main issue should be about consistency and not the rule as regardless of what the laws say, referees will have their own interpretations.
West Ham striker Michail Antonio quite clearly handled the ball to score against Fulham and that was more blatant than Rashford’s call.
That goal, surprisingly, stood while the Manchester United attacker’s striker was chalked off and things need to change in terms of all referees being on the same page.
