Merlin Rohl’s £18m permanent move confirmed but Everton will wish they had another choice
Merlin Rohl will officially become an Everton player at the end of the season, as the obligation to buy target has been achieved.
The Toffees would have no choice but to sign him if the Blues avoided relegation, and after Tottenham dropped points to Brighton, the L3 outfit’s Premier League status has been confirmed.
Spurs, who sit in 18th place, can only finish the season on 46 points, a tally David Moyes’ side are already above.
Those results over the weekend now mean that the £18million fee will be sent to SC Freiburg.
However, Rohl’s transfer to Everton would likely not be sanctioned if the Merseyside outfit had the chance to change it.

Why Everton would make different Merlin Rohl decision
While £18m is not a crazy outlay for a player in the modern transfer market age, it is still money that could go towards other signings, especially with the German rarely featuring.
At Hill Dickinson this season, Rohl has not been trusted by Moyes, starting just two games in the Premier League this season.
| Merlin Rohl in the Premier League 2025-2026 | Total |
| Appearances | 12 |
| Starts | 2 |
| Minutes played | 375 |
| Minutes per appearance | 31 |
However, the Blues have no one but themselves to blame for including that obligatory clause. With just 375 Premier League minutes, if Everton had a choice, they would likely not have sanctioned this purchase.
Back in January, Moyes earmarked the midfielder as a player with “more to come” this season, but that has been far from the case since.
In a world where financial restrictions hamper how a club can compete in the transfer market, the £18m spent on Rohl feels like it could have been more useful elsewhere, and the Friedkin Group will likely be thinking the same.

However, hindsight is 20/20, and Everton thought they were signing a player that could have a strong influence for years to come, and Rohl could still be that player for Everton.
Everton must learn their lesson in the transfer market
In truth, Everton’s summer window ahead of this season has merely landmarked Moyes’ role at Hill Dickinson.
Out of the nine players brought to Merseyside, only two can truly be slated as successful arrivals.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been a key member of the squad and has helped massively in the push for Europe with his goals and assists.

Meanwhile, the quality of Jack Grealish was noticeable from match one. However, even then, Moyes has been without the Englishman since January due to injury.
While it was a busy summer window, in terms of new names, there have been plenty that have not had lift-off in L3.
Players such as Rohl may hit the expected heights next season, but Everton must be smarter with their transfer business, as they are left stuck with the German, who has shown little as to why he can still play a part for the Blues.
