Seamus Coleman tipped for ‘unbelievable’ Coventry move after Everton exit

Seamus Coleman could be back in the Premier League very quickly after his Everton exit.

The Irish defender announced that he would leave the Blues at the end of the season after 17 years of exemplary service.

He has been offered a coaching role with the Toffees, but he may well choose to extend his playing career at either club or international level.

Coventry has been raised as an option for the 37-year-old’s next move, as he could link up with former Goodison Park boss Frank Lampard.

Everton fans would surely wish Coleman well if he made that move.

What was said about Coleman’s post-Everton career?

Everton legend Coleman does not seem ready to hang up his boots just yet, so he could make the switch that sees him stay in the top-flight.

Irish pundit Alan Cawley believes he could well end up working with Lampard again, in a win-win scenario for all parties.

Speaking on RTE Soccer Podcast on 18 May, he said: “I think he’ll need to go out and maybe play a bit more regular and whether that’s dropping down to the Championship or whatever the case may be, that’ll be fine as well.

“But I also have a sneaky feeling as well with Coventry getting promoted and (Frank) Lampard loves him, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him rock up at Coventry.

“Because it would be a brilliant move for him and would still keep him somewhere where he would probably play most weeks.

“But also from Lampard’s point of view, it would be an unbelievable fella to bring into the dressing room with the move into the Premier League, so it could be a win-win for everyone.”

Why Coleman to Coventry works for all involved

Coleman played 32 times under Lampard when he was in charge of the Blues, for a total of 2,477 minutes, captaining the side in all but four of those matches.

He would add vital experience to their ranks ahead of their first season back in the big time since they were relegated in the 2000-01 season.

He may not be the same player that he once was, but his 373 appearances in the top-flight make him a perfect leadership figure for the Sky Blues and one that could help get the former Chelsea star’s message across in the dressing room.

While he likely would not have much influence on the pitch, his off-field professionalism would help their cause massively, so Cawley may be right, it may be a win-win for all parties involved.

It would free the newly-promoted side to spend money on other recruits for their attempts to survive, and bring in an authority figure for Lampard, while Coleman gets to extend his time at the highest level.

It is a much better move for the veteran than the Championship or ending his playing career altogether, so it may be an appealing one.
