Kobbie Mainoo: New Man United contract should give Everton hope after failed James Garner swoop

Kobbie Mainoo looks set for a new contract at Man United, which could end their pursuit of Everton midfielder James Garner.

Everton's winter transfer window didn't bring a lot of success in terms of incomings, with Tyrique George the only new arrival at Hill Dickinson.

However, it brought success in regard to Garner, who was linked with a return to Man United amid his contract uncertainty at Merseyside.

Not long after the window closed, Garner agreed to new terms on a deal with the Toffees to extend his stay, which brought plenty of optimism around his future.

But that in itself was not likely to be enough to stop Man United's interest in Garner, but news of a new contract for Mainoo may just do that.

James Garner interest may have diminished at Old Trafford

Shape it how you like, but Garner has been one of Everton's best players this season, and despite the brilliance from the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Jordan Pickford, there's a case to be made that he is the most important.

Not only has he contributed with goals and assists in the Premier League, but his all-round game has been the driving force behind the success that the Toffees have found this season.

But that is the reason that many still feared for his exit, despite his new contract.

But with news from Old Trafford that Mainoo is set for a new deal of his own, it's highly unlikely that the Red Devils maintain any interest in Garner, given the wealth of options they have in the middle of the park.

There is a downside to Kobbie Mainoo's new contract

Not only was Garner linked with Man United, but Mainoo was also actually linked with Everton.

Ruben Amorim was not a fan of the Englishman, and his lack of gametime made it seem like a move could have been realistic.

But his resurgence under Michael Carrick, matched with the fact he is set to be rewarded with a new contract, means that interest has almost certainly ended as well.
