Legal expert outlines how Everton have opened door to new claims against Manchester City

Everton could play a role in other Premier League clubs making claims against Manchester City, a legal expert has told Goodison News.

The Citizens have become central to one of the biggest stories in the history of English football.

They are coming under massive levels of scrutiny having been found guilty on 114 of 115 financial charges from 2009 to 2018.

The Etihad outfit has been found to have artificially boosted their revenue by over £900million across that eight-year period.

That has raised questions of how they may be punished by the Premier League due to the unprecedented level of these charges.

It could actually prove to be worse than initially expected, and it may come down to Everton. Here's why.

Burnley and Everton set mechanism to hurt Manchester City

The Toffees have had their fair share of financial issues over the years.

They were hit with a point deduction in 2023 that ultimately totalled to be eight points.

They found to have breached the Premier League's PSR rules in the 2021/22 season, but received their punishment two seasons later.

Burnley took issue with that and the Blues were ordered to pay them £35.1m as a result.

Daniel Baker, Senior Associate at Knights, believes this arrangement will spell bad news for Manchester City in the near future.

The legal expert has represented elite-level coaches, athletes, clubs and organisations within football, including cases within the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Baker said: "What we do have with Everton is that they've gone through the Premier League process for liability and the sanction, and now, the Burnley case.

"The interaction with this City case with Everton isn't going to do anything to provide a legal argument to overturn Burnley's case, even if the appeal is ongoing.

"It has established the mechanism where you've got, breach as a sporting advantage to alter your outcome and then that leads to a victim being able to make a compensation claim. Manchester City face the possibility of that once the Premier League case is over, appeals and sanctions are over."

Could Everton claim against Manchester City?

There is likely to be several rabbit holes opened up by the latest developments at the Etihad.

It has been suggested that players, managers and clubs could all have claims to make for a lack of earnings.

The Toffees may well play a role in that, but they could have an extra reason.

That comes due to them losing three players to the Citizens between 2009 and 2018.

Joleon Lescott, Jack Rodwell and John Stones all made the move and weakened Everton at different times.

They could have claim for that, with the possibility only coming up due to their own legal case with Burnley.

A case which they are appealing and are yet to learn the result of.
