Merlin Rohl shares injury recovery timeframe as new Everton footage emerges

Merlin Rohl has missed Everton's last three matches with injury.

The German midfielder featured at right-back in the first three Premier League games of the campaign.

The 24-year-old also played in that position in the 4-0 Carabao Cup win over Preston.

He has been out with an undisclosed issue for the league matches with Tottenham and Ipswich and the cup clash with Wolves.

The Blues star has now offered an update on his recovery, and it suggests that he could return shortly.

That will be a lift for David Moyes, as he has proved to be a reliable asset in so far this season.

Rohl has now revealed that he is nearly finished with his rehabilitation from his injury.

Moyes had shared an update on Rohl's issue before the 1-0 win over Ipswich, saying: "Merlin is not available yet. Hopefully, he'll be ready by the end of the international break."

Now, the midfielder turned makeshift defender has offered a timeframe in new social media footage released on Everton's official channel.

He said: “Very nice, it’s going very well, I was enjoying it today outside.

“I think one and a half weeks more.”

That could put him in contention for the clash with newly-promoted Hull City when the international break is over.

However, there may be a different problem that could hamper the former Freiburg man as he attempts to make a comeback.

What issue could harm Rohl's chances of a first-team recall?

Rohl may struggle to get in the side when he returns to fitness for two reasons

For starters, Ainsley Maitland-Niles has cemented his position as the starting right-back since signing from Lyon.

Secondly, midfield is probably the position with the most competition for places in the Toffees' squad.

James Garner and Harrison Armstrong seem to be the preferred partnership at the base of the engine room.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall seems to have the number 10 role locked up at the moment.

Of course, Rohl's versatility will serve him well, and means that he can deputise when others need a rest, but he will want more than a back-up role.

He is willing to play wherever he is needed, but he will ultimately want to start, rather than coming on for cameo appearances.

He will just have to impress in training, and hope that Moyes is willing to break up the team that has enjoyed a sensational start to the season.
