David Moyes to watch closely as local media react to Adam Aznou 'experiment' away from Everton
Adam Aznou is beginning to get minutes away from Everton at Malaga.
However, his recent appearance has not been in the typical fullback role you would expect.
The Moroccan is hoping to get his career back on track following a season of watching from the sidelines.
A spell out in the Spanish top flight should prove to be a strong enough challenge, and proof as to whether or not he is ready for England.
Aznou has plenty of competition for places, but it seems his Malaga manager has found a unique way to fit him in.
Local media have reacted positively to his appearance against Deportivo Alaves while in an experimental position.
How have Malaga media reacted to Adam Aznou's first start?
When Malaga lined up against Alaves, Aznou was named in the starting XI for the very first time.
However, so was another left-back in Rafita.
Aznou's position was instead a hybrid between a winger and full-back, but not quite a wing-back either.
The loanee and Rafita would double up out wide, in what the Malaga media have described as two left-backs.
Diario Sur has awarded him a five out of 10, stating that against Deportivo Alaves, he "tried persistently, but was imprecise in many cases".
Other reviews have been much more positive for the Everton loanee, with Hoy Malaga handing him two stars from a possible three.
They state: "Contagious energy, nerve, and a mean streak. He's daring, which is no small feat considering the state of the team. Positive news."
Radio Malaga have also been complimentary, sharing how they view the Moroccan as showing signs of coming good.
They write, while giving him a six out of 10: "Funes's experiment of playing with two full-backs worked well. The Moroccan was wasteful on the ball; his lack of match fitness was noticeable, but he contributed on both sides of the pitch.
"He's improving, and there are signs of becoming a good full-back or wing-back."
Overall, the general viewpoint appears that Aznou is certainly not lacking heart or work rate, but rather his technique and physical conditioning still need work.
Aznou's loan spell could now finally kickstart
This was just Aznou's first start for Malaga, and it is positive to hear he made a solid impression.
Everton will now be hoping this is what he needed in order to kick on, and eyes will be on Malaga's upcoming games to see if he continues to start.
Now is the time for Aznou to showcase his qualities, as plenty of game time surely beckons if so.
There may yet be hope for the young defender.
