Nathan Patterson and his Scotland team-mates endured a miserable evening in a 3-0 World Cup loss to Brazil on Wednesday.

The Everton full-back was named in the starting XI by Steve Clarke's side, who were badly outplayed at Miami Stadium.

Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr was on target twice in the first half, as the Tartan Army were left reeling against a star-studded side.

Things worsened after the break when Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha made it 3-0, and left Scotland down and out.

It means Scotland are relying on favours to secure of one the eight best-placed spots for teams finishing third in the group stages.

The media has been reacting to the display of Everton full-back Patterson, and one thing will really infuriate Moyes and have him pulling out his hair.

How did Nathan Patterson get on against Vinicius Jr?

Even the world's best full-backs can struggle up against the superstar talent of Los Blancos forward Vinicius.

But it was an evening to be fully switched on, and Patterson certainly was not at all times.

At times, he gave a decent account of himself, but all in all there was a familiar feeling among the media reactions.

The Scotsman scored him 4/10 and wrote: "Was given a really hard time by Brazil's front line but was one of the more dogged defenders."

The Daily Record, who scored him a 5/10, noted: "Right-back had a difficult job dealing with Vinicius Jr down his side.

"Helped Ferguson smuggle Cunha’s effort behind just prior to the interval, but completely lost the Real Madrid superstar at the far post when he headed Brazil’s second. Weak penalty appeal instantly dismissed after the interval."

ESPN went with a 4/10, writing: "Left Vini Jr. in acres of space for Brazil's second goal and struggled to cope with the winger's movement throughout."

TNT Sports, who went with a 5/10, said: "He could have done more to stop Brazil’s second goal when Vinicius was allowed too much space to head home after Gunn’s mistake."

What will David Moyes have hated about Nathan Patterson display?

In all of those above ratings, there was a very familiar theme when it came to evaluating Patterson's performance.

While Vinicius is a supreme talent, Patterson completely lost the winger, who had the simplest of headers, as you can see in the BBC Sport highlight clip above.

It is clear that Moyes, a proud Scotsman who will be hurting at the humbling defeat, does not always fancy Patterson.

That much can be seen in the fact that often he has decided to utilise Jake O'Brien, more comfortable at centre-back, at full-back even when Patterson has been available.

Moyes is an absolute stickler for defensive discipline and it is easy to imagine he will not have been impressed by Patterson's defending for the goal.

There are already doubts about whether Patterson will have a long-term future at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and abject defending like that will not help his case, unfortunately.
