Everton: Nathan Patterson's season summed up vs Morocco as Scottish media react
Everton star Nathan Patterson was given the nod to start in Scotland's World Cup match against Morocco, though the right-back was unable to prevent defeat.
The defender has struggled at Hill Dickinson the past 12 months and remains inconsistent in terms of his availability.
Despite featuring on the bench more regularly in the latter stages of the season, Patterson was still unable to work his way into David Moyes' starting team.
There is now a strong chance that he leaves Everton for good this summer, with Rangers keen on re-signing him.
However, the 24-year-old was picked by Scotland manager Steve Clarke to start against Morocco after being named on the bench in his nation's World Cup opener last time out.
Scotland fell to a controversial 1-0 defeat, but Patterson may have harmed his chances of playing for the Tartan Army moving forward.
Nathan Patterson's struggles laid bare by media
Brentford's Aaron Hickey is the usual choice at right back or wing-back, but Clarke decided to mix it up against the Moroccans.
It may be a decision that he may never make again, but Scotland will still be hopeful of progressing to the knockout stages despite the loss.
Scottish media outlet, The Scotsman, reviewed Patterson's performance and wrote: "Surprise pick at right-back. Struggled under a stern examination from Morocco's attack, especially in the first half."
They rated him 5/10, while talkSPORT gave the Everton struggler a 6/10 rating.
The BBC wrote: "Off the pace early on and struggled against El Khannouss. One great cross that led to Scotland's best chance of the opening period," and gave him a 5/10 also.
There was a moment in the 52nd minute of the contest where Patterson had the ball deep into his own half and was seen trying to make a forward pass, only for the ball to go completely off the field.
His performance, unfortunately, sums up his struggles back on Merseyside.
This is not good news for Everton
Many were interested to see how Patterson fared in the match, considering he usually plays second fiddle to Hickey.
It's fair to say that the Everton man didn't take his chance, as the reaction from the media and fans online suggests that he had a night to forget.
The Toffees will most likely look to offload the right-back this summer, but, being on Premier League wages, it may be hard to find him a potential suitor.
No doubt Rangers officials will have been keeping a close eye on his performance, and they may not have been impressed with what they saw.
Moyes' priority this summer is to add new faces in that position, and Patterson will only be sold once his replacements are found.
