Nathan Patterson didn't get any respite with Scotland after a frustrating season with Everton.

The right-back has jetted out to the World Cup as part of the Tartan Army's squad.

They began their tournament overnight, but a 2am BST kick off wasn't enough to stop fans from tuning in.

After waiting 28 years, Steve Clarke's side will have been desperate to make an impression on the biggest stage of all.

That is exactly what they did as John McGinn's first half strike sealed a historic win.

Patterson played a role against Haiti in Boston, but it will feel all too familiar after the campaign he's had at Everton.

Nathan Patterson did very little for Scotland vs Haiti

This international tournament could see the full-back put himself in the shop window ready for the summer.

Things didn't start as he would have hoped at the World Cup as Brentford's Aaron Hickey was given the nod ahead of him at right-back.

The 24-year-old lasted 75 minutes before being replaced by the Toffees man to see out the game.

Scotland certainly managed to do that, but Patterson was unable to truly show what he can do.

Just 10 touches and three passes sum that up, while he also failed to win a tackle as he was dribbled past once.

The Scot also failed to win any of his attempted ground duels despite helping his side to keep a clean sheet.

That may only add to his frustrations after facing a familiar lack of minutes on the international stage as he has all season.

Patterson feels familiar feeling away from Everton

Hickey is the go to right-back option for Steve Clarke right now, but that won't take away from Patterson's frustration.

He is coming off the back of 240 Premier League minutes across just 7 appearances under David Moyes.

That is despite looking pretty useful in his three starts, but the last of those came in January.

The 24-year-old will have surely been hoping for something different at the World Cup under Clarke.

It wasn't to be and instead he faced a near enough carbon copy of what's been going on in L3 with a late substitute cameo that gave him no time to prove what he can do.
