Everton star Jordan Pickford's mentality clearly sets him apart after latest England declaration
Everton fans know all about Jordan Pickford's mentality as he faces competition in the England squad.
The Toffees' shot-stopper watched from the bench as James Trafford started against Spain and the Czech Republic.
Thomas Tuchel promised he would give the Blues' star two games during the three-week international break and he will soon have the chance to defend his status as the number one.
Pickford is close to reaching 100 caps for England and will start against Croatia on 3 October.
The 32-year-old will then likely get an opportunity in the second game against Czechia at Wembley Stadium on 6 October.
Jordan Pickford makes Everton promise after England question
Pickford will surely look to outshine Trafford in the upcoming matches to remind people why he has been England's number one for so long.
The Toffees' goalkeeper isn't afraid of competition from his Leeds United rival and relishes it, and that mentality clearly sets him apart from most players.
It would've been easy for the Blues' shot-stopper to feel a bit disappointed about the doubts around his position in the Three Lions' setup after being a loyal servant for so many years.
Instead, Pickford has promised to keep fighting for his place under Tuchel by continuing to deliver for the Merseyside outfit in the coming years.
Speaking at England's pre-match news conference on Friday, the goalkeeper said: "I feel, for me personally, it's always good to have good competition. I've always said in interviews; I've always wanted that competition.
"I'll always push myself at the club to be the best version of me and keep getting those caps. You can't let your foot off the gas at any time; you want to push yourself to be who you want to be."
Can Jordan Pickford maintain England status until Euro 2028?
Pickford still has plenty of years left at the top of his game, with the Everton goalkeeper arguably still in his prime.
Goalkeepers can usually play at the top level well into their late 30s and the Toffees' star will be 34 by the time Euro 2028 comes around.
It will be interesting to see how Trafford's development will progress with regular game time at Leeds.
The 23-year-old has age on his side, but Pickford's experience in the England setup is matched by only a few.
It wouldn't be surprising to see the former Sunderland ace retain his status as England's number for the next major competition.
