Everton star Jordan Pickford has been singled out for special praise with England yet again.

The 32-year-old has come under scrutiny at the World Cup so far after some sub-par moments, but no longer.

He was arguably at fault in the round of 32 as Brian Cipenga opened the scoring for DR Congo last Wednesday.

A Harry Kane brace forced the Three Lions through to a round of 16 clash with Mexico as England waited up for a delayed 2am kickoff on Monday.

Things were always going to be difficult at the Azteca Stadium as El Tri looked to maintain their stellar record at the iconic arena.

The Three Lions bagged a famous 3-2 win, but it wouldn't have been possible without the heroics of Pickford and that wasn't lost on Jack Butland.

There was always going to be a focus on the shot-stopper in such a massive game in Mexico City.

The altitude and heat was meant to play a major role on top of their incredible record at home.

That all meant that Pickford had to be on his best form and certainly was.

He made a number of top-class saves, but that wasn't the only thing that impressed former England international Butland.

The new Hull City signing spoke out via talkSPORT on Monday to pick out the way the Everton man helped see out a massive 3-2 win.

He said: "I think it was top. Everyone is going to talk about the saves, [but] I'm glad people are picking up on what he did later in the game.

"I know what it's like, you get to a corner late on, defenders turn around and look at you and say, 'Yeah, come for this.' The ball hasn't been kicked yet and, at that point, you've got to make a decision and he made brilliant decisions to see out the game.

"When the boys needed him, he came and took things, relieved the pressure and I'll tell you now, late on in a game, that's as good a feeling as any. It was a brilliant display from him."

That just sums up England's number one, but that isn't to say his saves weren't worth talking about.

Everton star Pickford did one small thing to secure England victory vs England

There are so many small touches that make a big difference at the top level.

In a round of 16 clash with the tournament hosts was always going to be difficult and it certainly turned out that way.

Raul Jimenez scored a second half penalty, but so nearly had goal to his name earlier on.

The Wolves man sent a diving header hurtling towards the bottom corner that looked destined to open the scoring.

Pickford got down to it and made a stunning save, with Butland deeming that a quick movement made all the difference to keeping the striker out.

The ex-Rangers man added: "There's so many little things to it. If you notice when the cross comes in, he realises it's low, he realises that Jimenez is making a run towards the front post and he adjusts his position just a touch to his left.

"By doing that, he puts himself in the prime position to make it. Then the action itself is so split second, that's just training, that's just being sharp, being ready, and he was.

"That little movement just before Jimenez heads it is what allows him to get there. Brilliant bit of goalkeeping."

It is those small details that make all the difference and it is safe to say that Pickford has been doing work to improve his game in those areas.

It paid dividends for England and he now has a quarter-final to look forward to in Miami against Norway on Saturday.

Everton are fully behind their man.
