Jay Bothroyd disagrees with Dermot Gallagher after latest Everton controversy
The Toffees managed to keep their unbeaten Premier League run going at the MKM Stadium, but feel as though they've dropped two points.
At least that's what David Moyes thought, as the Blues chucked away the lead through individual mistakes to the newly-promoted side.
However, one incident in particular could have changed the game in the first half, as Brennan Johnson had a goal ruled out for offside.
The winger thought he had scored his first Premier League goal for the L3 side after Ryan Giles' clearance bounced off the forward and in, but a VAR review decided otherwise.
Everton would have taken the lead in the match, and Bothroyd believes that the goal should have stood.
Jay Bothroyd disagrees with ex-Premier League referee on Everton incident
The Premier League released a statement over Johnson's offside goal, explaining that the Wales international had been caught in an offside position, and then interfering with play.
The winger has received criticism since arriving at Hill Dickinson this summer, which is all the more reason why Moyes may feel let down by the decision.
Everton players have made their feelings clear on the decision from VAR and referee Michael Salisbury, but there are some who still believe that the call was the right one.
Speaking on Sky Sports' ref watch, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher was of the opinion that Johnson's offside goal was ruled correctly.
Gallagher said: "Johnson starts off in an offside position, which isn't an offence, but then challenges the opponent and goes to clear the ball. It impacts the defender. He is then given offside. The goalkeeper is out and, there is only one defender on the goal line.
"He clearly impacts him as he blocks the ball. He moves towards the defender, and he can't clear it properly."
Bothroyd disagreed, replying: "When the defender blocks it off the line. Giles tries to clear it, and then it hits Johnson. By the law, that should be a goal. He has tried to clear it and is in control of the ball."
There were several instances last season that Everton didn't agree with, so let's hope that this isn't just one of many others for this campaign.
What was Tim Sherwood's view on the incident?
Interestingly, it would've been very similar to Jack Grealish's first goal for Everton, after he scored a late winner from a Crystal Palace player trying to clear the ball last season.
It wasn't meant to be, though, and the former Tottenham star was taken off for Tyrique George in the 66th minute.
Tim Sherwood was also speaking to Bothroyd and Gallagher, and agreed with the latter's view of the decision.
Sherwood said: "Correct decision. Totally impossible for the officials on the day to get that one right [without VAR]. Good for VAR, that one."
Johnson keeps finding himself in these positions, so hopefully, it's not long until it pays off and he's on the right side of one.
