Mark Clattenburg adamant on Morgan Rogers controversy as Everton frustration shared vs Chelsea
Mark Clattenburg has analysed the footage of Morgan Rogers' challenge on James Garner as Everton lost to Chelsea.
Xabi Alonso's team travelled to Hill Dickinson Stadium on 17 October and won 2-0, thanks to a second-half brace from Pedro Neto.
However, things could've been different for the London club against the Toffees had they gone a man down before the break.
Rogers initially received a yellow card after a heated clash with James Tarkowski and, soon after, in the 42nd minute, was involved in a controversial incident with Garner.
The former Aston Villa ace's studs-up challenge has become a point of contention after the game.
Many have deemed it a 50-50 challenge, but the English attacker may have gone a bit overboard.
Should Morgan Rogers have been sent off in Everton vs Chelsea?
While some might feel Paul Tierney was right not to send off Rogers, Clattenburg has a different opinion.
After analysing the footage, the former Premier League official has no doubt that the Chelsea forward should've been shown a second yellow card.
Clattenburg believes the challenge wasn't 50-50 coming out of it since the 24-year-old had his leg up away from the ball and caught Garner just below the knee.
On the other hand, the Toffees' midfielder went low into the challenge with his studs against the turf, which didn't put his opponent in danger.
Speaking on So Near, Yet So VAR on 18 October, Clattenburg said, "This is a yellow card if it was identified by the referee. If we're analysing it, like we see it now, Rogers is very lucky not to receive a second yellow.
"What we have to remember is that VAR can't, even with the retrospective power, doesn't have the power to issue a second yellow card where the referee hasn't.
"This is a clear example, which is the frustration because Everton will argue Chelsea should be down to 10 players here, and in my opinion, should've been if the referee had seen the foul correctly.
"In the cold light of day, when you analyse this challenge, this is a clear foul and a clear reckless challenge because of the speed, there was some force and a clear contact on the knee."
How Merlin Rohl decision epitomises David Moyes
Everton have struggled for goals this season as Thierno Barry continues to miss chances.
David Moyes doesn't have any other option to choose from up front, but what he can do is add more threat out wide.
Tyrique George and Tyler Dibling have had decent starts to the season, but the Scottish manager chose to count on Merlin Rohl on the right-wing.
It's clear Moyes was more preoccupied with stopping Chelsea's threat than giving the Toffees a cutting edge up front.
The German midfielder was the more defensive option, and in the end, the decision backfired.
Some of the Merseyside outfit's fans have grown frustrated with Moyes' conservative approach and the loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium was just another example.
