National media shares where Everton ace Idrissa Gana Gueye was clearly lacking in brutal 4.5/10 rating in Senegal World Cup defeat to Norway
Everton ace Idrissa Gana Gueye suffered more World Cup disappointment with Senegal on Monday.
The veteran midfielder, 36, was part of the Lions of Teranga side who were beaten 3-2 by Norway in Group I at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland was on target twice, with Senegal falling to another disappointing defeat despite a brace for Ismaila Sarr.
Having lost their first group-stage game to France, Gueye and his Senegal team-mates are now staring down the barrel of elimination.
They do have one more game to go against Iraq, and will need a healthy win to have a chance of qualifying as one of eight best third-placed teams.
And the national media has been reacting to the performance of Gueye, who is yet to decide on his Everton future.
Idrissa Gana Gueye fault highlighted in Senegal defeat to Norway
Gueye is a hugely influential figure for his country, but it was an altogether lacklustre performance from the experienced midfielder.
He was involved in the build-up to Sarr's first goal, but he lacked his usual energy and ability to cover ground.
It was something that was not missed by DSports, who questioned whether the former Paris Saint-Germain man was fully fit.
They gave him a brutal 4.5/10 rating, and said of his performance: "Clearly lacking match fitness, he didn't have his usual impact in midfield. He was the one who lost possession leading to Norway's second goal.
"But he was also the one who set up (Sadio) Mane, who flicked the ball on to Ismaïla Sarr for the Lions' first goal."
WIW Sports offered a similar assessment, though they did give him a slightly higher 5/10 mark.
The online outlet wrote: "He was valuable in winning back possession and covering several kilometers.
"He was also effective with long balls, including the one to (Nicolas) Jackson (17th minute). But it's clear we expect him to perform at a much higher level."
What is the state of play with Gueye's Everton contract?
Gueye's focus right now is, understandably, on his World Cup campaign with Senegal.
But his future at Hill Dickinson Stadium will need resolving at some point, with Gueye set to be out of contract in seven days time.
Everton did have a one-year option to extend, but Gueye did not play enough games for the club to trigger it automatically.
The Toffees released a statement earlier this month to say that they were still liaising with Gueye's representatives over a new deal.
It remains to be seen if an agreement will be reached, but it is unlikely there will be an immediately announcement anyway.
