Premier League delete 'bizarre' official post about Everton and Nottingham Forest points deductions

The Premier League have deleted a post on X which hinted Sheffield United could be saved from relegation after the appeals over Everton and Nottingham Forest's points deductions.

The Premier League's post was shared by journalist Richard Buxton on X with the caption: "They've now deleted this. Probably because it was an utterly bizarre take."

The post itself read: "Following their defeat to Newcastle, Sheffield United are relegated pending Everton and Nottingham Forest's points-deduction appeals."

This hinted that Everton could be handed an additional deduction of 20 points as a result of their appeal (the difference separating them from Sheffield United), while Forest could be deducted an extra ten points in the same vein.

Both clubs appealed their most recent deductions, in which the Toffees saw two points revoked and Forest saw four taken away for their breaches of profit and sustainability rules.

It would've been safe to assume that the Premier League would avoid any controversy surrounding Everton and Forest this season given the extent of the criticism surrounding the points deduction, but the deleted post has only added fuel to the fire.

Everton’s survival was confirmed thanks to back-to-back home victories against Burnley, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Brentford, but according to the now-deleted post, fans cannot relax yet.

The fact it was swiftly removed from their social media channels will tell the fans all they need to know - it was a nonsense statement with no real consideration of the situation at hand and the impact it has had on both clubs and sets of fans.

As Buxton said, it was a bizarre take and one that made little sense in the context of the situation. Was the Premier League account suggesting those extra giant points deductions could happen? Only they know.

Most recently, Andy Burnham has insisted the fans will not forget the way they have been treated by the league this season - claiming he would speak more on the subject in due course, having been highly critical of them already this season.
