The brutal irony behind Steven Gerrard comment in ill-advised Everton swipe

Steven Gerrard has been caught out after trying to make a joke about Everton.

There is no love lost between the former England international and the Toffees.

That is obviously due to his ties with Liverpool after 17 seasons at Anfield.

He isn't liked at Hill Dickinson Stadium and nor would he want to be after so long competing against the Blues.

That hatred has now made its way onto a continental stage.

Gerrard looked to make a joke at the expense of Everton, but has only made himself look silly.

What did Steven Gerrard say to joke about Everton?

It's fair to say that the 46-year-old has seen his managerial career spiral downward.

After a positive spell at Rangers, he went on to have a horrible time of things at Aston Villa before an ill-advised move to Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq.

He now finds himself working as a pundit and co-commentator instead of being in the dugout.

Gerrard was on the gantry on Wednesday night as Liverpool hosted Atletico Madrid.

The away side took the lead on 17 minutes as Marcos Llorente found the net once again on Merseyside.

That prompted commentator Darren Fletcher to discuss an interesting fact about the Spaniard live on TNT Sport.

He said: "It's been brought to my attention at half-time that [Llorente] actually has a dog called Anfield based on the fact he's scored so many goals here. Genuinely."

There was a pause before Gerrard chimed in to say: "I'd call mine Goodison."

Fletcher chuckled alongside Ally McCoist, who was also on co-commentary duty, but it is actually Everton who are the ones to have the last laugh.

Why Gerrard has made himself look silly at Anfield

You can't see his face, but with Fletcher and McCoist in hysterics, you can guess that Gerrard was chuffed with his comment.

It has garnered over 700,000 views and 7,000 likes on X so far as the wider footballing world have joked at Everton's expense.

The irony is that Llorente has actually scored more goals at Anfield in three outings than the Englishman registered in 16 attempts at Goodison Park.

The Atletico man has netted five goals in L4, with his fifth coming to open the scoring on Wednesday.

By comparison, Gerrard scored just two goals at Goodison.

The joke doesn't really work when your record at the grand old lady isn't something to boast about.

Richarlison has as many Anfield goals as Gerrard has at Goodison, plus another three for Tottenham, but not sure he's boasting about it on national television.

It's fair to say that the comment may have been somewhat ill-advised.
