Everton midfielder Harrison Armstrong has been promoted within the England youth set-up.

The young Englishman has received a call-up to feature for England's under-21s after originally being excluded from their squad.

Armstrong has started the season strongly for the Merseyside club and has quickly become a fan favourite.

At international level, the 19-year-old has represented England at various levels with 18 total caps across the Three Lions' youth groups.

Those appearances have been split over both the under-18 and under-19 level, with two recently arriving with the under-20s this international break.

But now, he has been given the chance to step up at a higher age, with Lee Carsley turning to Armstrong amid concerns within his camp.

Why has Harrison Armstrong received late England under-21s chance

Armstrong's chance for England under-21s has arrived late, but he could now be set for his debut at that level.

The Everton man has been promoted by Carsley following injuries to midfielders Jobe Bellingham and Lewis Miley.

The 19-year-old has been selected as one of the two replacements to come into the squad with a couple of fixtures still to be played over this international break.

Armstrong will now get to link up with fellow Everton youngsters Tyrique George and Tyler Dibling who had both made the original selection.

George and Dibling were both substitutes in as England's under-21s beat Kazakhstan 4-2 in their latest fixture.

Dibling was handed just 11 minutes off the bench, while his fellow Everton teammate was given 51 minutes due to Jamie Gittens going off injured in the first-half.

And Armstrong will hope to join them in earning a cap over the coming days.

When do England under-21s next play?

England under-21s next fixture is only around the corner with the young Three Lions set to take on Slovakia under-21s on 2 October at 7.45 PM.

With the quick turn around, and little time to train under Carsley, it would be a surprise to see Armstrong immediately thrown into the starting line-up.

However, there would be another chance for the Everton youngster to make an impression and push for a first start at the under-21s age group.

Carsley's side have another match on 6 October against the Republic of Ireland.

So, that could be the game that Armstrong potentially pushes for a start as he will have a few days to impress in training.

If his performances in preparations for that fixture are anything like how he has played for Everton, that should be no issue for the young midfielder.
