Why Mark Travers' Everton situation has just become more complicated after new announcement

Mark Travers is already feeling the negative effects of remaining at Everton.

The 27-year-old joined in the summer of 2025, under the knowledge he would play deputy to Jordan Pickford.

But the Irish goalkeeper had been touted for a move away in the summer window, with the Toffees drawing up plans to replace him.

Wolves' Sam Johnstone was a leading candidate to join Everton, but in the end, no transfer would be made, with the Englishman later joining Celtic.

The Everton number two will undoubtedly be feeling disappointed at Hill Dickinson.

But those feelings will be further intensified after the latest announcement by the Republic of Ireland.

The Ireland decision that leaves Mark Travers facing a fresh Everton dilemma

Travers had been a regular fixture in the Ireland squad throughout the last year.

He was on the bench for all of Ireland's World Cup qualification games, including the play-off loss to Czechia.

Despite not featuring in that campaign, Travers would have felt pride alone from simply being called up.

However, after his lack of minutes in L3, and his failure to secure a move elsewhere, he is now being negatively impacted on the international stage.

The Republic of Ireland have now released their latest squad for the September and October international fixtures.

And Travers has been dropped.

Instead, Heimir Hallgrimsson has selected Max O'Leary, who has been a constant starter for West Brom, with Gavin Bazunu also being selected after getting game time for Bolton Wanderers.

And this may now leave Travers thinking about what is next for him, with a possible eye on the January window.

You wouldn't blame Travers for pushing for January exit

With his lack of involvement at Everton over the last year, Travers seeking an exit would not come as a surprise.

He has now lost his place in the Ireland squad due to his lack of minutes and he will only continue to fall down Hallgrimsson's list if that continues.

Even in the Carabao Cup games, Travers has continously been snubbed by David Moyes, with Pickford starting both fixtures this season.

Travers last competitive appearance for the Toffees came back in September 2025.

The Irishman has the quality to become a number one goalkeeper elsewhere.

And while he may have been happy to be number two at Everton last season, the loss of his international place could make him think again.
