Why 'reality has come crashing in' for Ainsley Maitland-Niles at Everton
Ainsley Maitland-Niles has come under scrutiny at Everton.
The negative opinion of the Englishman had quickly vanished after his start to life on Merseyside.
Many were unhappy with his introduction after years of needing a new right-back in L3.
The 29-year-old made a positive impression in his opening four outings, including a debut wonder goal against Manchester United.
He's been truly helpful in maintaining the Blues' unbeaten record at in the opening weeks of this campaign.
Things could now be collapsing around Maitland-Niles as he faces negative reviews after drawing to Hull City.
What has been said about Ainsley Maitland-Niles vs Hull City?
There were plenty of ups and downs against the Tigers on Sunday.
Both sides had their fair share of chances, with Thierno Barry having four of his own before finding the net.
David Moyes' side dominated possession with 65 per cent and arguably should have secured three points with the opportunities they created.
That didn't happen in the end as Hull took advantage of the two big chances that came their way.
Maitland-Niles had a part to play in both as his lapses in concentration gave the hosts possession before they went on to score both their goals.
That was picked up on by Daily Mail journalist Ian Ladyman as he ripped into the defender.
He wrote, "Reality has come crashing in for Ainsley Maitland-Niles at Everton. We all remember his scorching 20-yard equaliser for his new club against Manchester United on debut. What a moment that was.
"But now he has two errors in the bank leading to Hull goals on Sunday. One point gained as opposed to two lost. He’s in the red unfortunately."
That is far from a glowing review, but what do the numbers say?
How did Maitland-Niles perform in Everton vs Hull?
Making two mistakes that led directly to goals is hardly a good look.
The above review certainly feels slightly harsh as the 29-year-old did provide an assist for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's equaliser.
It was a superb cross and was the quality that the Blues needed at the MKM Stadium.
That was one of the two chances he created on the day, while he also put up 12 line-breaking passes.
Maitland-Niles also chipped in with four defensive actions and two duel wins.
Ladyman has focused on the errors, and fair enough, but there was plenty more to his performance.
