The assurances David Moyes will want as new Everton contract claim made

Richard Dunne believes David Moyes deserves a new contract at Everton.

Moyes signed a two-and-a-half-year deal when he returned for a second spell as Everton manager in January 2025.

Consequently, the 63-year-old's contract will expire in June next year, when Moyes and Everton may have a decision to make.

Under Moyes, Everton have been on an upward trajectory, and the Toffees are unbeaten this season.

Their solid start to the campaign has occurred despite the backdrop of an abysmal end to the transfer window.

Former Toffees defender Dunne thinks that Everton's hierarchies will need to give some promises to Moyes if he is to sign a new deal.

Will David Moyes get TFG backing at Everton?

There is no disguising the fact that Moyes was badly let down by the Everton's recruitment team in the summer.

It was promised that Moyes' squad would be in a much better place by the end of the window than when it started.

But baffingly, Moyes was left with a scenario where Thierno Barry is his only senior striker the striker in the squad.

Moreover, Moyes has no expert back up in either full-back position, and just senior outfield players.

Dunne, speaking to the Liverpool Echo, think that Moyes will want assurances in the transfer market moving forward before committing to a new contract.

He said: "I don’t think anybody could do much better with the squad and the resources he’s got there. There are some really good players in the squad - there’s just probably not enough of them.

“He definitely deserves a new contract, but he’ll also want some reassurance that the owners are going to back him and give him funds in the transfer market to take them from mid-table up to a Europa League position they can challenge for.”

While there is largely a big swell of support for Moyes, there is often an underlying sense of frustration from some in the fanbase.

There are those with the school of thought that Moyes might be a bit too pragmatic as a manager.

But Moyes has probably earned the chance to try and kick Everton on and challenging for European football.

However, to do that, he really could do with more backing in the transfer market.

There is some real talent in this Everton squad, but it lacks depth and an injury or two could really leave Moyes scrambling.

He will have some big decisions to make in the coming months, and it does not feel clear cut he remains at Hill Dickinson Stadium beyond this campaign.
