Everton are pursuing the signing of Hayden Hackney as David Moyes looks to improve his squad.

The Middlesbrough star missed out on promotion to the Premier League with the Teesiders after losing to Hull City in the play-off final.

Hackney will be entering into the final year of his contract next season, giving hope that a cut-price deal could be agreed.

However, it appears Boro are not willing to sanction any discount for a transfer over their top star.

The 23-year-old has impressed in the second-tier over the last few years, with him winning Championship Player of the Year in 2025-2026.

Moyes' side, however, are not giving up hope as details of Everton's first approach for Hackney have emerged.

What is the latest on Everton's interest in Hayden Hackney?

Hackney is still firmly on Everton's radar, however, the stalling over a deal could see other club's steal a march

As it stands, Hackney's preference is to move to Hill Dickinson Stadium ahead of next season.

While, Everton have been reported to be in negotations, the Daily Mail have now shared details of Everton's opening offer.

According to their information, the Toffees sent in a bid worth around £18million which was rejected.

This deal was structured to see Boro received £11m up front, with £7m in potential bonuses and add-ons.

The Championship side are holding out for a higher up front fee as they seek £20m plus £5m.

Everton are expected to return back to the table as they look to make Hackney their first signing of the summer window.

However, they could now run into further complications in negotiations.

Why Everton cannot afford to wait to move for Hackney

Getting the best deal possible for Everton is of course the priority, but the Blues may have to settle for paying what Middlesbrough want.

Interest from other Premier League sides complicates any potential idea of a reduced offer with Crystal Palace ready to swoop according to the report.

Additionally, Hull City are reportedly ready to meet Boro's exact valuation for Hackney.

The Championship club can use that fact in any negotiations and simply tell Everton there is already demand at the price they are requesting.

Ultimately, there may not be any more time for Everton to stall to get his transfer over the line.
