Everton get Hayden Hackney at a snip from Middlesbrough as contract clauses come to light
Everton have managed to land Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough for a knock-down fee.
It was reported on Monday that Everton have agreed a £25million deal with Middlesbrough for Hackney.
However, it has now come to light that the Toffees will be handing over significantly lower than that up front.
Hackney is set to join this week in time for the Toffees' pre-season campaign.
The 24-year-old will be David Moyes' first signing of the summer transfer window.
And the Merseyside club's transfer chiefs deserve a pay rise amid the latest update shared on the fee for Hackney.
Everton may never pay full amount for Hayden Hackney
Hackney was recently labelled "too good" for the Championship by Boro boss Kim Hellberg.
He has a point, as Hackney led the way in a number of metrics in the second tier last season.
However, Everton appear to have landed the former England Under-21s international for just £16.5m upfront.
As per a new update by Paul Joyce, who broke the initial news earlier on Monday, the other £8m will be made up of add-ons.
£5m relates to appearances, while the other £3m is related to Champions League and England appearances.
On that basis, this is very much a win-win deal for Everton, with Moyes potentially to thank.
David Moyes plays his part in Hackney deal
The same report explains how Hackney wants to play under Moyes at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Crystal Palace showed a late interest in Hackney, but the midfielder has already made his mind up.
It is now expected official confirmation will arrive this week, with that new
Moyes made clear he wanted backing this summer in order to improve on last season.
Bringing in Hackney, for a fee far below many expected, is certainly a great way to go about doing just that.
Other names have been linked with a switch to Merseyside, but none more so than Hackney.
With a line pretty much drawn under this saga - if you can call it that - it is time to move onto the other targets on the list.
