Everton make Tyrique George decision as Xabi Alonso door left open
Everton would like to keep Tyrique George at the club after his loan from Chelsea expires.
The 22-year-old joined the Hill Dickinson Stadium outfit in the winter transfer window on loan, but made just 11 appearances for the Blues.
The Toffees have the option to buy the 20-year-old for a figure understood to be in the £22million range.
The Liverpool Echo reported on 3 June that they are open to paying the buy clause but would ideally prefer to revisit it.
Everton needs fresh impetus on the wing as their attack has been lacking in recent years.
What have Everton decided on George?
Everton were previously undecided on George’s future, but it appears that they have now made their decision.
However, the report claims that they have left the door open for Xabi Alonso to give the Chelsea gem a chance in pre-season.
That is a result of not just paying the option, but instead trying to negotiate it down below the agreed figure.
Why do Everton want to bring fee down?
The Blues have every right to try to bring the fee that they would pay for the England Under-21 international down.
He could not convince David Moyes that he was the answer, making just one start in his time on Merseyside.
He failed to notch a single goal or assist, so it is no surprise that the recruitment team are reluctant to drop such an amount on his services.
If they can reduce the fee, then it makes sense, as George still has a lot of potential and could develop into a fine player if he is handed enough opportunities to get into a rhythm.
A lower amount could give the Toffees more money to play around with, to bolster the rest of their squad this summer.
There are many signings needed to get the Blues to where they need to be, which is competing for a spot in European competition.
They can’t afford to waste money on a player who can’t step up immediately, and there is no evidence that George can do that.
Therefore, if they can’t reduce the figure that the Stamford Bridge side are demanding, they should walk away.
