Everton lost their legal battle against Burnley over PSR breaches, and have been ordered to pay the Clarets up to £40million by the Premier League ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Toffees were hit with the bombshell news on Wednesday, confirming the outcome of a legal saga that has rumbled on for years.

It's yet another big hit to the Blues by the Premier League, one in which the Freidkin Group will feel very hard done by.

Plans have been in place early for Everton to get their transfer business done, with David Moyes keen on adding multiple new players.

The Toffees had been progressing with a deal to sign Hayden Hackney, while there is a hope to keep Jack Grealish at Hill Dickinson for next season.

However, the £40m development has thrown a spanner in the works and will surely cause some anxiety among Evertonians heading into a crucial summer transfer window.

How detrimental will Everton's £40m payout be for summer window?

Everton are expected to appeal their legal loss, as they feel the charges and amount they have been ordered to pay are harsh.

It's a large sum of money, but it's not known whether the Blues would have to settle this as an up-front payment to Burnley or in instalments, with nothing sent yet.

Either way, considering some of the financial issues that the Blues have had over the years, this will be another negative on the books of the Friedkin Group, who have been trying to steady the ship.

However, it should not put a stop to some of Everton's in-progress deals, like their plans to sign Hackney and Grealish.

But it could give the Friedkin Group concerns about spending beyond expected transfers this summer.

Stefan Borson has his say on Everton's transfer dilemma

Football finance expert Stefan Borson has been paying close attention to Everton's legal battle with Burnley, and was asked if he thinks this will affect this summer's transfer deals for the Blues.

He replied: "I don't think so," in response to a question on X.

It's important to note that the question was whether Everton's ability to spend will be "massively" affected.

It could be that more sought after luxury deals are pushed back due to this, as Dan Friedkin and Co. won't want to push financial limits.

Regardless, it's an unwanted hit to take, and one that could have some slight affect for this summer, in regards to incomings.
