Everton are planning to re-start negotiations with Idrissa Gana Gueye Gueye over a new contract extension.

The veteran midfielder, 36, will be out of contract at the Hill Dickson Stadium at the end of the month.

Gueye signed on for an extra 12 months last July, and an option to extend that by an extra year was included.

However, that clause dependent on Gueye making a certain number of appearances, and he fell short of the required tally.

Everton confirmed in a statement earlier this month that they remained in talks with Gueye's representatives over an extension.

However, with Gueye currently at the World Cup representing Senegal, no agreement has yet been reached.

When will Everton resume Idrissa talks?

Gueye is enduring a tough time of it at the World Cup, with Senegal losing both of their Group I matches so far.

They started with a 3-1 defeat to France in their opener, before losing 3-2 to Norway on Monday, with Erling Haaland scoring a brace.

It means Senegal need a healthy win over Iraq in their final pool match to boost their chances of qualifying as one of the best eight third-placed teams.

The Liverpool Echo has now reported (23 June) that Everton are ready to resume talks with Gueye over a contract extension.

However, they add that talks will only resume once Senegal are knocked out of the World Cup, so that Gueye can focus on his future without distraction.

Senegal round out their group campaign against Iraq on Friday, so it remains possible that talks can start again before the end of the month.

How did Idrissa Gueye perform for Everton last season?

Despite his advancing years, Gueye - in his second spell with the club - has remained an important member of the squad.

He made 25 appearances in the Premier League last season, averaging 84 minutes per game.

The defensive midfielder averaged 1.7 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, and 4.6 balls recovered per 90 minutes in the top flight.

Additionally, he won 56 per cent of his total duels, while he chipped with two goals and three assists for David Moyes' men.

If Everton can tie him down another year, it feels a bit of a no brainer given he is still performing to a good level for the Toffees.
