Everton's need for a new right-back is arguably the worst-kept secret in the Premier League.

And it is not exactly like it is a new issue is it?

Jake O'Brien was largely used there last season, even though he is much more at home at centre-back.

Even further back, though, the likes of Ben Godfrey were utilised out of position given the lack of specialist options.

Everton have been trying hard to finally find a solution this summer, and a new right-back is very much on the transfer wish list.

But it is what Everton have seemingly decided over their pursuit of Celtic's Alistair Johnston that could have a troublesome knock-on effect.

What have Everton decided over Alistair Johnston?

Everton have been linked with Canada international Johnston in recent weeks.

Indeed, David Moyes has even spoken personally to Bhoys boss Martin O'Neill about what it will take to land the 27-year-old.

However, recent reports have suggested that Everton's interest has cooled amid reports Celtic want upwards of £15million to sell.

If that's what the Toffees have decided then that is fine so long as there's a solution.

But the cause of cooling their interest here could be extremely problematic in the coming weeks.

First and foremost, other clubs will know that Everton have a dire need for a specialist right-back, and this will only play into the hands of selling clubs the closer we get to the window.

Moreover, we are now just a couple of weeks away from the start of the Premier League, so there is a realistic prospect that any new signing will have limited time, or no time at all, to integrate into the squad.

If Everton think the price is too high for Johnston then it is their prerogative to walk away, they have to make sure they are getting the deal right.

But there is no doubt that the situation is looking increasingly desperate, and that desperation is something that could be exploited.

Who else could Everton target?

Johnston is not the only right-back linked to Everton, indeed there has been an increasingly long list.

One option could be West Ham United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is thought to want to remain in the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence has also been linked earlier in the window, though right now there is not much clarity on whether he will angle for a departure.

Everton really need to knuckle down this week, though, because a finding a solution to a problem that has been so long standing is an absolute must.
