Where Everton will look next after Celtic stance cools Alistair Johnston pursuit

Everton look set to move on from targeting right-back Alistair Johnston.

The right-sided fullback position is undoubtedly Everton's priority position this summer now.

Following Seamus Coleman's departure, out-of-favour Scotsman Nathan Patterson is the only natural right-back currently in David Moyes' squad.

Links to Johnston brought about an air of excitement, with the Canadian both proficient in defence and attack.

Everton were boosted by the fact that Johnston wanted the transfer to the Premier League.

But now after this latest update, it appears that other options will now be considered and here is why.

Why Everton are backing off Alistair Johnston transfer

Johnston to Everton looks to be quite far off now amid the latest stance at Celtic Park.

The Toffees had hoped to reach an agreement with the Scottish side, but the pair's evaluations looks to have stalled any talks.

According to the Daily Record, Everton are now working on other options after failing to reach an agreement with Celtic over their right-back.

Celtic are said to have wanted over £15million, a price that Moyes' side are seemingly unwilling to meet.

Everton could yet return for Johnston, as it is not stated that they have completely ended their interest.

Rather they look to be seeking better value in the market this summer instead.

Who could Everton target next?

Everton do have plenty of options to turn to.

Recent reports from the Athletic stated Ridle Baku was on Everton's shortlist, and now that the pursuit of Johnston has ended, they could turn to him.

Interestingly, the report from the Daily Record also mentions Guele Doue's name who has long been linked with Everton this summer.

Although, similar to Johnston, they share that the deal could prove too expensive for the Toffees.

Other options such as Djed Spence, Raoul Bellanova and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have also been touted among potential solutions.

But since those links back in late June and early July, the trail has gone quite cold.

While Everton have also now missed out on Nahuel Molina to Roma, with him set for a move to Italy.

It could certainly turn out to be a busy few weeks, as Moyes will likely want the right-back in before the Premier League season begins.

And it is a position the Blues cannot be too hasty on, with patience the right way to go about things.
