How Nathan Zeze could fundamentally change Everton immediately

While many supporters will be hoping for signings in attacking areas, or at right-back, the arrival of Zeze could hand the Blues an edge going forward.

As a centre-back, that may not make much sense, but the NEOM defender's data points towards a player that is far from a traditional stopper at the back.

Over the years, Moyes has typically leaned upon those battling and bruiser types of centre-backs.

It is evident in his usage of both Michael Keane and James Tarkowski, but perhaps the Scotsman is now eyeing an evolution.

What makes Nathan Zeze different to Everton's current options?

Zeze has long been a player on the Blues' radar, and it looks like they are reigniting their interest.

When it comes to the Frenchman's qualities, while he is solid defensively, some of his best traits actually come from his passing.

According to Data.MB, among all centre-backs in the Saudi Pro League last season, Zeze is ranked with the best in four areas.

Per 90, he makes the second most progressive passes with 10.45, while he is ranked third for progressive actions with 11.78.

Furthermore, he ranked fourth for most forward passes (21.75) and forward passes completed (18.01).

So, while on paper he appears to be a defensive signing, his qualities would actually have quite an impact on how Everton progress up the pitch.

Why Everton may actually need another centre-back

In the squad, the Toffees currently have four names that can play there.

Tarkowski, Keane and Jarrad Branthwaite are the most likely to feature while Jake O'Brien is a natural centre-back, despite his spells out at fullback.

But across pre-season, Moyes has shown some signs that he is thinking of changing things up in L3 next season.

The Blues manager opted to use a three-at-the-back formation against Bolton Wanderers in the most recent friendly.

If he is looking to try that tactic out more often in the upcoming season, then adding a fifth central defender makes plenty of sense.

In a back-three, Zeze's passing qualities would be utilised more efficiently as well, with the spread across the back potentially opening many more passing lanes.
