The striker position is still of interest, with Thierno Barry their only recognised option right now.
BBC journalist Giulia Bould gave an update on Wednesday, starting with a possible return for Balogun, saying: “It is highly unlikely.
"The player failing a medical and then leaving after the deal sheet was submitted on deadline day would be enough for the Toffees to drop any idea of the USA striker returning in January.
“I expect the hierarchy to already be looking elsewhere as it is very clear having just one striker will cause problems if cup runs are also a target.
“One option right now is Charly Alcaraz. He popped up with the winner against Wolves in the Carabao Cup after being on for just three minutes.”
That is the right move, as Balogun left the L3 outfit in the lurch by not signing when he had the chance.
He may have had doubts about their commitment to him, given they were shopping around for alternatives, but that was only due to issues raised in the medical.
Why Everton aren't desperate for Balogun transfer revival
Barry can hold the fort until January, that has been made clear by his performances so far.
The young Frenchman has notched five goals in seven matches in all competitions.
If he can stay injury free, then Moyes will likely not need another option for the first half of the season.
The likes of Alcaraz, Brennan Johnson and Tyrique George can play upfront as makeshift options for now, while the recruitment team find a target with the right numbers and attitude.
It may well have been a blessing in disguise missing out on Balogun, as he clearly was not fully committed to the move.
The 25-year-old may well have been a good marketing move, with his profile in the United States potentially bringing new fans.
However, that will be the case with any player from an underutilised market, so they could look for targets from somewhere else.
It remains to be seen who they go for, but Barry can be relied upon for now until a new name is brought through the Finch Farm doors.
