What Nathan Patterson has told Everton fans in honest Torino exit message

Nathan Patterson has acknowledged that his time at Everton 'didn't go to plan'.

The 24-year-old joined the Toffees in January 2022 from Rangers.

He went on to make 70 competitive appearances for Everton, always struggling to carve out a significant role in the squad, particularly under David Moyes.

Indeed, he ends his time on Merseyside this summer fresh off the back of playing the fewest number (eight) of games in a full single season with the club.

The Scotland international now gets a fresh start with Torino, after completing a permanent deadline day move to the Serie A side.

In the midst of his transfer going through, however, the defender still found time to share his thoughts on his time with Everton.

Given how his time at Everton went in regards to playing time, it would've been very easy for Patterson not to have said anything of note about the club.

Especially considering his exit was finalised in the dying hours of deadline day, where he of course will have been busy getting the deal sorted.

But Patterson has shown his class with a detailed and candid message to Everton which he posted on his Instagram account on Tuesday evening.

"To all the Toffees, sometimes in life things don't go as planned," he said.

"Nevertheless it was an honour to play for such a fantastic club and meet so many great people along the way.

"I always gave my best and pushed as hard as I could, even if things were going against me. I hope that came across.

"It goes without saying that I wish everyone at Everton all the best for the future. I hope it's a great season."

So, will Patterson have more starting opportunities at Torino, and why might the move come with a slight role change for him?

Why Patterson may not be a full-back at Torino

Patterson is joining a Torino side who haven't enjoyed a great start to their 2026-27 season.

They have tasted two defeats from their opening two Serie A games under new manager Ignazio Abate.

He has been employing a back three system with wing-backs in Turin, so Patterson may well be deployed in a more advanced role than what he played at Everton.

Torino currently only have one natural right-back/right wing-back in the form of 20-year-old loanee Niccolo Fortini as well.

So, Patterson should be confident of ousting him as the starting option soon enough, but he will likely require some time to build his fitness.
