What sources in Spain say about Everton's bid to sign Pape Gueye amid Villarreal decision

Everton have been heavily linked with a transfer for Villarreal's Pape Gueye this summer.

After losing Idrissa Gueye on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract, the Blues will need to sign a replacement.

Following the signing of Hayden Hackney, it has been shared that another midfielder is a priority for the Toffees.

Earlier reports had suggested that Everton had agreed a deal to sign Villarreal's Gueye.

But Goodison News understands that suggestions of an agreement with Everton and Villarreal were wide of the mark at this stage.

However, that is not to say an agreement could not be reached this summer amid what sources in Spain are saying about his future.

Everton could yet have encouragement over their chances of signing Villarreal midfielder Gueye.

It appears that the Spanish side are open to allowing the Senegalese international to leave this window.

According to The Athletic, they share that Spanish sources have stated that Gueye's future could be away from Villarreal this summer.

It is shared that the La Liga club would sanction the 27-year-old's exit as they are "keen" to bring in funds this transfer window.

That stance seemingly opens the door for any interested party to formalise their pursuit with a bid.

But the information does also share that Everton's interest in Gueye has yet to be verified despite the reports of a previous offer.

So, while there is an opening for the Toffees to pursue the midfielder, it does remain unclear whether Everton are actively tracking the 27-year-old.

Where are Everton looking next in the transfer market?

The Athletic reiterate that signing a new midfielder "remains a priority" for David Moyes.

However, at the moment, it appears work is currently underway to finally solve the right-back problem.

Everton are preparing to make an offer for Celtic's Alistair Johnston.

However, Everton and Celtic are said to be apart in their valuations on Johnston.

Talks will of course be required as the two outfits try to come to a reasonable agreement over the Canadian, and until that is resolved, movement on the midfield front may simply have to wait.

While business this summer has perhaps been slower than most would like, there is still three weeks left before the start of the Premier League season for Everton to get their ducks in order.
