Everton have been heavily linked with a move for Mauro Icardi after the transfer window closed.

The Toffees are in desperate need of a new number nine and David Moyes has admitted that the club are exploring the free agent market.

With the Argentine striker currently looking for a new club, there have been suggestions that the Blues could sign him.

Icardi's contract at Galatasaray ended after last season and there have been claims that his next destination could be Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The 33-year-old has never played in the Premier League, but has extensive European experience after making a name for himself at Inter Milan.

It's safe to say the attacker is no longer in his prime, but the Merseyside outfit could do with cover for Thierno Barry in the squad.

In Greece, Olympiacos and PAOK want to sign the former Inter striker, who was hailed an "exceptional finisher" by Luciano Spalletti in May 2018.

As for the Toffees' interest in the attacker, it has been dismissed as "fake news".

Some fans don't want to see Everton invest in free agents like Icardi and instead want them to rely on their youngsters.

There's no guarantee the Argentine striker would even be able to help the Toffees this season if he were to sign in the coming weeks.

While the Blues are building for the future with their young talents, they need an alternative if Barry gets injured.

Icardi would give Moyes some peace of mind in the French forward's absence.

While the likes of Tyrique George and Brennan Johnson could play down the middle, it won't be the same as having a target man like the Argentine ace.

Icardi should be seen as a short-term solution to the problem the Blues face right now.
